In a broad sense, Business services are activities that support a company without producing a physical commodity. They include the marketing of products and services, consulting, logistics (including travel and shipping), staffing, waste management, administration, and security. A company may outsource these tasks to free up internal resources and reduce costs.
Like their product-based counterparts, business service companies are subject to competitive pressures. To be successful, they must provide a distinctive set of features that differentiate them from competitors. However, whereas product managers focus on designing the features buyers will value, service designers must think about customers’ perceptions of the experience they receive. For instance, a customer who dithers at a fast-food counter can slow down service for everyone behind him.
A business-to-business (B2B) transaction is a type of business service that occurs between two trade organizations, for example, a car manufacturer and a wholesaler. In B2B transactions, the parties exchange goods or services for a fee. These transactions are not regulated by the same regulations as those that occur between consumers or businesses.
A career in Business services can be an excellent choice for those who enjoy variety and flexibility. The sector is large and includes multiple industries, including information technology, engineering, architecture, law, advertising, and human resources. Many of these jobs can be performed remotely, making them an attractive option for people who don’t want to commute or need a flexible schedule. Some positions require only a high school diploma, GED, or vocational degree; others, such as in human resources or finance, may require a bachelor’s or graduate degree.
