A hobby is a personal interest that is undertaken outside of working hours for enjoyment and recreation. Examples include creative or artistic pursuits, collecting, tinkering, sports and adult education. Although hobbies may lead to substantial knowledge, skills and experience, the enjoyment and relaxation acquired are more important than financial reward. Hobbies differ from professional activities in that they do not provide for a person’s livelihood, and are generally not pursued for the purpose of vocational discernment.
Hobbies help reduce boredom and stress by providing an activity to engage with in times when the mind needs a break from work or family responsibilities. They can also help improve mental health by boosting happiness and self-esteem, for example by increasing resilience to depression. This is because leisure activities encourage a state of flow that promotes mental well-being. Even simple hobbies such as listening to music, going on a stroll in nature or doing a daily crossword can bring happiness and a sense of fulfillment.
Some hobbies are also good for the body, such as running and swimming. Others can be good for the soul, such as gardening or attending a poetry reading. Hobbies are often a great way to socialize with friends, as well. For example, painting and playing chess are fun to do with other people. Bingo is a popular hobby for seniors, and shopping for clothes or antiques can be a satisfying and social hobby as well. It is also possible to turn a hobby into a business, for instance by making organic skincare products and selling them online.
