Spirituality is a worldview and way of life based on the belief that there’s more to this planet than meets the eye, more to us than just purposeless mechanical machines, and more to our existence than just the electrical impulses firing in our brains. It involves a thirst for meaning, peace, mystery and truth.
Spiritual paths come in many different flavors, and people can be both religious and spiritual or not be at all. For some, a spiritual journey is just a deeper alignment of their mental, physical and emotional worlds while others see it as a completely new path. It’s like kicking a ball around the park versus playing a game of football that has rules, referees and field markings.
The biggest misconception of spirituality is that it’s a religion. Many people think that to become spiritual they have to join a certain group or religion but that is not the case. Spirituality is a very personal thing that can be manifested in any number of ways whether it’s doing heart meditations, mindfulness exercises, affirmations, setting intentions, praying, journaling or going on an adventure.
Most importantly, the key to spirituality is that it brings you closer to yourself and to the divine. When you can get in touch with your soul and spirit, you can then begin to understand why you’re here on this earth at this time and what your higher purpose is. Spirit will guide you toward what brings the most joy, fulfillment and happiness. This can be as simple as asking for guidance toward the best career path, meeting someone at just the right moment or following a creative idea that’s pushed through to you by spirit.
